Exactly! I wonder how much it has to do with browsing other technical/tech-focused people's pages, where it seems a lot more common than as a corporate icon for "pop out."
When I say obvious, I mean after years of familiarity. Icon design is very tough and a lot of it is based on assuming familiarity. Wikipedia (e.g., to edit an article) for example is almost unusable to somebody who hasn't been using it already.
