I once heard a great point: gender is one of the variables collected just because, as part of the demographics. It is also discrete. So, you always have it there, whether there are predictions or not, and can run arbitrary group comparisons

Good point! Easy to run an analysis even if it's completely bonkers. Makes it so so likely that much gender differences research is accidental (at least) p-hacking!
