I think it is more about having the right understanding of what freedom is and its implications, the proper state of mind if you wish.

Like that intolerance cannot be tolerated (Popper: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paradox_of_tolerance …) or more like "radical freedom" type ideas (Sartre: http://existentialcomics.com/comic/17 ) — or I'm totally off and it's something else entirely?

Both perhaps, but *I* would add that you need to be wired so that you dare to be free which sometimes can interfere with other aspects of yourself such as safety, moral believes, etc.
