Last week it was #TimeToTalk. But unfortunately it wasn’t the right time for me (I was too ill). I thought it still wasn’t, but then I saw @zerdeve’s recent thread, and it gave me the courage that I lacked before.https://twitter.com/stephenfry/status/958999111197450240 …

Berna D. @zerdeveSo this is a touchy subject and one I don’t feel too comfortable talking about publicly. I’m still very tentative in putting this in writing but there it is: After a very very long period of misery, I don’t think I feel depressed anymore. And that’s such an unfamiliar feeling.Show this thread1 reply 0 retweets 6 likesShow this thread -
Ok, so I’ll come out of the closet (yes, this is how that feels):

I have some mental health issues as a result of burnout, among other things anxiety & (occassional) depression. The symptoms aren’t half as bad as they used to be, but they aren’t totally gone yet either. The risk of being triggered makes it hard to talk about it openly.

Yet, seeing how reading other people’s stories here on twitter helps me, I felt the least I can do is come out, and hopefully contribute a bit as well to opening up the discussion of mental health in academia and elsewhere.

Wow
@IrisVanRooij thank you for writing! Yes it sure does feel like coming out. I know how vulnerable it feels but also I hope you will feel the liberation and empowerment that comes with it as well. Hugs and much love to you
