One of the most disturbing/upsetting things is: seeing some of those who have very directly been affected/targeted by the worst kinds of people in science leap to their defence. And thus, the these worst kinds of people easily whitewash themselves using their victims/defenders.

People who have been obviously taken advantage of within science — in ways that break employment rules, by their superiors — in some cases go out of their way to protect them and the culture that allows abuses to go on unchecked. Like a type Stockholm syndrome. Depressing.

Yeah, it's so complex because you want to metaphorically shake these people to make them see, but on the other hand they themselves, even though victims, are also abusive to others.

And the victims are doubly used by the people who profit the most from this: firstly in the normal sense, taken advantage of, and secondly in the white-washing sense, where they are used to claim "look X minority thinks I'm great".
