I'm not convinced bodega is an English word. And I still don't knowv what it means!

It’s American English, broadly equivalent to the British term “corner-shop”

That was confusing for me because bodega is cellar in spanish.

Confusing for me too as I'm British and in the spirit industry, so only familiar with the apparently Spanish usage.

Right, but “I’m not familiar with this usage” is different from “I’m not convinced this is an English word”, which is kind of low-key racist.

So I'm racist for not knowing an English word?

No. There is a reflexiveness about protecting bodegas in the states atm because they are typically run by immigrants (and beloved). So if you know what they are but get mad at the invasion of Spanish in your lexicon, then that is not on.

I know what they are now. The corner shops here are mostly Turkish-run, with a few West Indian shops too. Though there's a huge Latin community in my neighbourhood so they can find some of their favourite products in the Turkish and West Indian shops.

Don't worry. I'm definitely not prosopagnosic but I blank people accidentally a lot and sadly people think I do it on purpose. I just get really lost in my thoughts. 💜

Oh, no! Some people — I think — lose their sense of civility, esp as it's rush hour! I generally avoid it at all costs. 🤬
