Am I the only one that thinks calling it an “overproduction of PhDs” just because people end up outside of academia is incredibly elitist and gate-keeping?

Well there is a massive shortage of tenure-track positions, compared the number of graduates and postdocs seeking them. What is elitist is saying that those who take other options are “dropping out” or “quitting” academia. Some very talented researchers choose other career paths.

The elitist part is the people saying we need fewer people doing PhDs

My concern is that it is unethical to admit students knowing their preferred job is so scarce just for cheap labor. Fine if nonacademic is what they wanted, but I have seen too many have to accept that they have no choice.

As an educator and mentor, how about you help current and potential students to know what it’s like so that they can make an informed choice? Pretty sure supervisors are capable of that. Acknowledging the issue would also show that you can communicate with potential students.
