Sharing your confusion how someone can see scientific theories as 'facts' (might be connected with the oversimplified view of science taught in high school?). Especially like that piece of Kuhn in noting that even observations are theory-loaded (and not objective 'sense data').

Depends who's creating the papers. My lab puts untested predictions in the model papers. It's a great way to write and ensures ( baring outright lying) that predictions are not post hoc.

I don't think what we said precludes that at all.

I interpreted "fall out" as meaning accidental rather than deliberate but I can see you might have meant it differently.

I reckon we could say that predictions can be quite useful in theory development (even if they're not the main focus). As in, a complex model can make unexpected predictions, and following up on these predictions can be highly interesting.

Agreed. When discussing theories & predictions, also potentially relevant to discuss what types of predictions we are thinking of. See e.g. https://twitter.com/wgervais/status/957405878809964544 …

I’m reminded of Herbert Simon’s ‘Invariants of Human Behaviour’: http://www.cs.oswego.edu/~kern/csc466/invariants%20of%20human%20behavior.pdf …, and what he and Allen Newell called “laws of qualitative structure” (http://www.cs.utexas.edu/%7Ekuipers/readings/Newell+Simon-cacm-76.pdf …).pic.twitter.com/ydpqg5kAKD

Interesting, and makes me think of paradigms (in the philosophical sense) (esp. "they set the terms within which more detailed knowledge can be developed" and "they often set the terms on which a whole science operates").

Was looking for a certain paragraph related to this (sadly haven't found it), but came across something bit related to current debates (included the 1st picture for context, but it's primarily about the 2nd and 3rd).pic.twitter.com/9wn6NJdNf5
