Am I the only one that thinks calling it an “overproduction of PhDs” just because people end up outside of academia is incredibly elitist and gate-keeping?
I think we're in agreement that the needs/wants of PhD students should be correctly calibrated by the environment as much as possible and the supervisors should (as you said!) help them achieve realistic goals.

What worries me is that many academics behave as if leaving academia is tantamount to failure. This attitude is actually what causes students to never want to leave, feel like failures, and never realise there are appropriate jobs out there for them.

You are right. That is sad that academics cannot think beyond their own noses. Not everyone is suited to the madness of a career in academia. I do not understand why ppl do not understand that...
-
Because academics behave like an academic job is the only dream job and many students buy it.

“Some” not all academics

-
