Am I the only one that thinks calling it an “overproduction of PhDs” just because people end up outside of academia is incredibly elitist and gate-keeping?

As far as I am concerned, if ppl cannot get jobs in their chosen profession, then I would say there is an overproduction of PhDs. So call me elitist & tar & feather me...

But not all PhDs are gained in order to work in academia. For example, there are data science and other related research jobs outside universities which require the same kinds of skills a PhD provides, so it makes sense to obtain one.

What I am trying to underline is that people with PhDs outside academia might be doing exactly the job they always wanted.

Also I am not convinced we need more jobs specifically in academia in order to give all PhD graduates jobs exactly because not all PhD graduates want to work in academia. Many want to use their stats skills, for example, to do data science and get paid 10x more than us. 😅

Something that academia really needs to confront is how abusive it is and why many prefer to be both treated better and paid more outside of it.

Sure - and if that is the case, that is fantastic! I was just saying that many grad students I know cannot get the sort of job they really want - and that is a job in academia.

Ah, I see. I take your comment now to mean that you think too many (overproduction) people are given positions in PhD programs and are led to believe the need/want a job in academia? Isn't part of the training though to also teach them their skills are valuable elsewhere?

Yes indeed. I think that it is a real problem. I do try to give my students multiple options, but that said, if they have a definite career goal, then I will try to help them achieve it.

I think we're in agreement that the needs/wants of PhD students should be correctly calibrated by the environment as much as possible and the supervisors should (as you said!) help them achieve realistic goals.

What worries me is that many academics behave as if leaving academia is tantamount to failure. This attitude is actually what causes students to never want to leave, feel like failures, and never realise there are appropriate jobs out there for them.

You are right. That is sad that academics cannot think beyond their own noses. Not everyone is suited to the madness of a career in academia. I do not understand why ppl do not understand that...

Because academics behave like an academic job is the only dream job and many students buy it.
