That's not how speaking and listening works IMHO. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Although the receiver does not share blame for the infraction, the receiver is responsible for his/her own response, & some responses are healthier than others. A person who reacts well to interaction with a bully might come away with a new friend.

I find it a very empathic reaction to what you call a bully. Perhaps we use the word differently. I had tons of bullies in my childhood and beyond and the only reaction that has _ever_ worked well for me was in January 2016 when I finally went to the police.

A bully who commits assault should be prosecuted. In high school I was once placed head first in a tall trash can, which was then set up on a drinking fountain. Somehow though I left the situation unharmed and with the bully as a friend.

How peculiarly absurd, not to mention borderline illegal, can be suggesting that "A person who reacts well to interaction with a bully might come away with a new friend" What about with a rapist or any other CRIMINAL. Frankly, a very unfortunate comment. Correction: appalling.

Don't equate a rapist with someone who occasionally teases someone else with words. I have seen many teens/young adults develop friendships with people who bullied/teased them. Everyone was better off in the end because of how the person reacted positively.

"I was once placed head first in a tall trash can, which was then set up on a drinking fountain" is not equal to "occasionally teas[ing] someone else with words" !!!!

I also notice many abusive relationships and pretty much Stockholm syndrome in certain groups, so? Being friends with abusers is a way to survive when no other options are possible.

I don't mean that you stay friends with them if they keep abusing you. Just that a person's positive response to soft abuse can sometimes end the abuse and lead to a positive relationship.

This is the type of behavior on which I'm really focused: https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/freedom-learn/201301/the-educative-value-teasing-0 … but there are many variations. May be a distant cousin to what you call bullying.

I know a bit about Peter Gray’s ideas about education (which I find valuable in countering some unneccasary preconceptions that education needs to involve schooling), though I do not know this piece.>>

That said, I think it’s confusing & unhelpful (for communication) to use words like teasing, bullying, and abuse interchangeably. Someone already has jumped this discussion. I propose to leave this point of trying to arguing abuse/bullying and benefits of positive responses, as>>

It may be triggering for people having experienced actual bullying and abuse (to equate them with teasing), and the argument seems to not be about either of them anyway (but about teasing).

Let me clarify. I'm not affected by this conversation. I'm not a victim of bullying, not more than most ppl. (nothing that I couldn't handle), but I do know victims and know of their pain. His statement is simply unacceptable and I just don't trust his intentions/actions.
