Which proves it is ultimately about what the speaker means by the words and what the hearer means by the words, not with some objective fact about any particular word.

That's not how speaking and listening works IMHO.

Although the receiver does not share blame for the infraction, the receiver is responsible for his/her own response, & some responses are healthier than others. A person who reacts well to interaction with a bully might come away with a new friend.
-
I find it a very empathic reaction to what you call a bully. Perhaps we use the word differently. I had tons of bullies in my childhood and beyond and the only reaction that has _ever_ worked well for me was in January 2016 when I finally went to the police.
-
A bully who commits assault should be prosecuted. In high school I was once placed head first in a tall trash can, which was then set up on a drinking fountain. Somehow though I left the situation unharmed and with the bully as a friend.
-
That's rare — good for you.
-
How peculiarly absurd, not to mention borderline illegal, can be suggesting that "A person who reacts well to interaction with a bully might come away with a new friend" What about with a rapist or any other CRIMINAL. Frankly, a very unfortunate comment. Correction: appalling.
-
Don't equate a rapist with someone who occasionally teases someone else with words. I have seen many teens/young adults develop friendships with people who bullied/teased them. Everyone was better off in the end because of how the person reacted positively.
-
"I was once placed head first in a tall trash can, which was then set up on a drinking fountain" is not equal to "occasionally teas[ing] someone else with words" !!!!

I guess: if you'd say: you run like a girl, not aware of the connotation. then nobody is to blame. the womans rage would be real. your genuine surprise too. There is not one meaning shared, you have used two word contents sharing one word form? however, this is ubiquitous?
-
but if you know the connotation, its different.
-
I find it hard to believe somebody would say it without knowing and often the harm done is equivalent. Like Abeba and I have mentioned about the times we have misspoken in the past the correct reaction is: apology and listening, regardless.
-
When you stamp on somebody's foot you apologise.

I think we're pretty much (as much as is possible) on the same page after you elaborated.

hm. that is not what i meant but i see your point. i started not from normative ethics (something to do with blame) but with the grounding of the meaning of words. more metaphysically if that is the right term /1

Ah — gotcha!
