I used to wonder why I find the position of both scientism and new atheism troubling but now I see the overlap between them much more clearly.

IMO it is more a problem of bullying in social media, an attempt to control public opinion by means of intimidation. Bullies, particularly those holding positions of power and have insidious aims, use any argument they believe can inflict the most damage in their interlocutor, >>

because, as the more daring admit, they have nothing to lose. The use of scientism is probably an attempt of appropriation of the “opponent” language, misrepresenting it to induce confusion and designed to produce a variety of useful fallacies. Remember Olivia? We talk about it.

I see indeed appropriation of language used to address oppression by minorities etc. (eg ‘tone policing’), but so far saw scienticism as independent dimension. I’m trying to analyze different dimensions to get a better handle in how to understand and rebut the derailing tactics.

I wrote a blog about this. I think these 'scientism-ists' (o dear) are either 1) Dogmatic believers in a Church that the priests themselves (actual scientists) have very different (more subtle) ideas about. 2) Mistaking 'science' for 'reality' http://www.jellevandijk.org/science-is-not-what-you-think-it-is/ …

I/we outlined 3 types in our piece: "[1] the only truth is that which can be reached via the scientific method, [2] that philosophy has no role within science, and [3] that science does not require moral or ethical guidelines." http://sjwiki.org/wiki/Scientism

I agree 1-3 are false so I’m confused abt. philosophers on the list: Ladyman proposed ‘ontic' structural realism & my fav. Dennett quote is:“There is no such thing as philosophy-free science; there is only science whose philosophical baggage is taken on board without examination”
