Is it okay to mis-quote an article because it describes 'the programmer' exclusively as a 'him' ?

Depends if you make it clear something’s changed – I think it’s dubious to quote something and silently tweak the wording. Then it’s not really a quotation, is it? How about: > and [they] load the FooMod into the BarServ Using square brackets that way is a common convention.

Oh yeah, I wasnt planning on replacing it without [bracketing] the changes. But wasnt sure if even that is acceptable. Going with [the programmer] for now, because any pronoun option seems weird.

Bracketing the changes is fine, and if you’re adding clarity that’s missing because the quote doesn’t have the full context, I would even recommend it.

Just to repeat, definitely square bracketing is 100% acceptable.
