"Why does every prof start application review season with '[extreme and public condescension]'" is perhaps a superior observation (of pointed generalization)

I don't talk about relatives' illnesses in my applications - 2 rounds of graduate apps or now 8 years of research internship/fellowship apps - but I sure as hell talk about how MY illness, having threatened my life, gave me a wicked set of priorities

Not to toot my horn but to make a broader point about students - it takes an IMMENSE amount of bravery to discuss our personal circumstances, including our or relatives' illnesses

Disclosing my own medical history is an actual danger but I elect to do it because it's explicitly WHY I've so aggressively pursued research...I'm not going to lie just because people get squeamish, and if someone rejects me for it, I'm not losing out

Similarly, if someone is disclosing personal trauma re: relatives' illnesses, how is that "vanilla"? Perhaps interrogate why it's "generic" (i.e. common) for students to discuss trauma on applications; what standards are we placing on students? How scared are today's kids?

What ELSE is supposed to get a young student - I've been saying 'kids' b/c these young adults are recent kids, and I also have undergrad internship apps in mind - interested in biology? A Nobel by the age of 21?

AND - what ELSE are we supposed to do when you ask for a personal statement or bio, and we don't have 15 years of research? In what way do graduate internship processes make us turn our own traumas into 'points' to make, emotions to sell?

LAST, how do you read about someone's lost loved one, and roll your eyes? Think "not another one"? Is that really your response to death? Is that really your response to young people discussing death? PHEW
