Yeah, unfortunately, you often don't hear of his (or other "geniuses") assholery but romanticized hype like this... https://www.brainpickings.org/2017/10/17/richard-feynman-arline-letter/ …

Ugh I am so sick of romanticizing people into idols. Talk about their work, yes, but the whole concept of an idol is so misleading and helps noone.

I suppose the underlying reason is a childish need to have role models, superheroes

Is it? Why do some of us reject the idea of idols inherently? I’ve never had role models, just like @o_guest, but I cannot quite say why because it goes way back. My culture aggrandizes “great men” and American culture is way too enamored with superheroes. Just so odd to me!

My only problem with calling it childish is that sadly many people need them. Many people especially from non-white non-western non-male non-straight groups tend to feel they need a role model. I have seen it first hand, people telling me I am their role model just for existing.

Fair enough, but perhaps this is the result of being mistreated/oppressed. I had other ppl in mind

Or just represented. People need to feel they will be accepted, otherwise they think things are not "for them". It's natural.

Absolutely esp when it's those that challenge stereotypes. Representations matter.

I honestly think representation, or lack of it, is part of the reason for lack of women esp black women in tech and stem
