I agree with a lot of the sentiment in this article, especially regarding how universities are run, but there are phrases within it that have brought out some irrational and extreme anger and I want to talk about it for a sec https://www.theguardian.com/books/2017/dec/24/the-difficulty-is-the-point-teaching-spoon-fed-students-how-to-really-read …

Just as in life effort does not result in equivalent rewards, the same can be said of university. People have different skills and learning techniques and if someone is struggling with one subject that does not mean they aren't making an effort.

I am sure my teachers at school complained I had to be spoon-fed in maths. I really struggled. I got an E in my AS level mock. But then one teacher took me aside and spent extra time with me and something clicked. I got an A and do SO MUCH maths now in my PhD

Similarly, as an undergraduate I did SO MUCH work. But. my dissertation supervisor decided to be totally unhelpful with our first drafts because we were supposed to work it out for ourselves and I got 63%. Compared to 80+% for all my other written work.

Essentially that 63% scuppered my chanced of a first and there was nothing I could do. In the end I missed out by 1%. It may not have mattered to my supervisor but it mattered so much to me and I was crushed. All for the sake of giving proper feedback.

I was lucky in that I have very encouraging parents who would not let me give up but at the end of the day by not giving students that extra bit of time (from yourself or TAs) you can completely discourage good hard-working students from trying. It's a self-fulfilling prophesy.

Honestly I would not be where I am now if I hadn't had other lecturers on my undergraduate degree who gave me great feedback and extra time and encouraged me to stick with it. Some might call it spoon feeding but I would call it being a good mentor and literally your job.

Be kind to your students, or at least send your teaching assistants off to be kind to them. It makes all the difference. Fin.
