I posted some papers by our lab that don’t include only heterosexual participants. There are plenty of others though. https://www.apa.org/pubs/journals/features/sgd-sgd0000160.pdf …

That ev psych assumes....: “that humans beings come in two distinct natural kinds, 'men' vs 'women’” (although you went on to say some things about research practices that I agree are orthogonal to this point)

Ok, thanks. How does your research conceptualize gender (if not 'binary', as you understand that term)?

It doesn’t see it as binary (as the work on the fa’afine demonstrates) and doesn’t treat those who identify as men or women as homogenous groups.

I'm trying to dig through the links you sent (there are many). I see that this one is not from your lab, correct? https://www.apa.org/pubs/journals/features/sgd-sgd0000160.pdf … (I agree it is interesting, relevant). Which paper from your lab could I best look at for the point you are making?

No that’s work by Tony little who we work with a lot. The ones below it all take sexual orientation into account (another way of not treating self-identified men and women as a homogeneous group).

I agree the one you mentioned is the clearest evidence of sex being treated as non binary.

I may be wrong but I think, Iris and others were not claiming that all research into gender and sexual orientation is inherently flawed but that the findings are not necessarily explained by evolution.

I think — again I may be wrong — that the criticism was more than just treating things as binary, but it's great to see work that doesn't do that!

For me personally, what worries me is that sometimes people (not just in evo psych but in general) think many things are either/or.

For example hearing the trite and pointless phrase "nature versus nurture" instead of realising juxtaposing them is inherently misguided.

Where I think these issues become evo psych ones is when a theory needs to be formulated that explains what is being studied. E.g., what aspect of "Male Bisexuality" [from article] is, claimed to be, evolved, what aspect is cultural, what aspect is personal preferences?

Does evo psych, because of the evo in the name, always turn to evolutionary-based theories to explain such findings? If yes, I think that's where issues start to make sense for me, since there are other factors in determining, e.g., orientation.

It depends how you define ev psych (which is why these discussions often go round in circles, imo). To me, ev psych includes factors like culture, experience, environmental factors etc.

Thanks for explaining how you see the meaning/goal of evo psych. Do you think others within the field think and work the same way as you do? If yes, has the name just stuck even though evolutionary theory isn't the main source of inspiration for prediction/explanation?
