Kind of more seriously, sometimes I start thinking how our civilisation is held back by lack of diversity, complacency and patriarchal PoV in science & tech. But I have to stop pretty quickly.

I think about that daily. We celebrate so many ideas and people from the history of humanity. Not to detract from their value but I imagine how different the world today could have been if we had been celebrating more diverse ideas from more diverse people all along.

What's important is that the Great Man theory is slowly being dismantled and in its wake we see diverse people have been there all along, even if marginalised and ignored. Promoting the diversity of the past and present, however small it is, is a surefire way to bootstrap it in

the near future. The most surprising thing for me is how often my students, back when I taught, told me I'm a role model. What was unexpected was that I didn't have to do anything to be one — merely existing inspires confidence in others who identify with me cos I'm different.
