Recently, I've witnessed some senior academics mock PhDs & postdocs for choosing industry. Apart from the utterly baseless points raised (hours are flexible in many data science jobs, workloads are often similar, etc.) — it's completely out of order in general. I see you.

out of order to mock anyone's choices! my experience is quite different - I've (thankfully) never heard anyone mock students for going to industry, and the data science jobs I'm familiar with are 9-5 jobs with x days of paid vacation a year... US vs UK?

I've been mocked for choosing industry, publicly on Twitter, in the US. By my favorite personal N.S. bully in ACL, who is also a troll. And in ACL, if you are a troll, then it is also okay that you bully. =P

Its just N.S. I'm an "advertiser", apparently, even though I don't work in Ads.

I wasn't even thinking about the US government specifically. But yes!
