I've had these discussions too at my dept. Receive emails 'Hi guys, ...' adressing 4 men and me.

Oh I'm sorry, I missed that part of the thread. (I thought I had read everything but perhaps not)
-
I might be wrong! But I can't tell what
@suzi's comment is about... Here's the bit about generations:https://twitter.com/twitemp1/status/941726408778293248 … -

Also sorry for tagging the wrong suzi! Phones are hard!

Reading through again... Maybe I'm misunderstanding, but I think
@suzi is saying I shouldn't have brought up the gender neutral thing because it is too contentious and issue? And I should value keeping the peace over this point? -
Just some more thoughts on this: I'm not sure
@zerdeve meant specifically you. I thought she meant that we should not assume bad intention behind using a word like 'guys' given our priors. That is why I thought I'd clarify that (obviously) no bad intention was assumed. -
Further, for what it's worth, I wanted to really clarify to
@twitemp1 that there was no intention to make words 'taboo'. I have been the recipient of silencing-by-taboo-tactic and know how suffocating that can be. Don't want to do this to anyone. -
Agreed with all the above. I certainly didn't assume any negative intent behind "guys" at all. We all make slips.
-
I would hope any and all of you would feel free enough to let me know if I use/used a phrase that is exclusionary. I know it can be very stressful to ask another person to change even the tiniest amount, but often it's worth it and often on Twitter people listen when i do it.
