If I was a PI and people did this in my lab, I'd get rid of them.

This = mess with colleagues' PCs for "fun".

Ah, not sportsball! So would you also fire people who habitually do not lock their systems?

I feel like I would assume my lab wouldn't be sabotaging each other's systems.

Please have a talk to your security department about what you should and shouldn't assume. My assumption is that in a controlled environment there probably won't be malice, but there _will_ be a reminder to not be sloppy about security.

The assumption our (mine and the other ECRs and not-so-ECRs) collective) disagreement with you is about security and not workplace bullying, bro-ish BS, inclusivity, is painful to see in black and white.

I feel like if you were in an environment where you need that high level of security that you can't leave your system unlocked when leaving your desk, you might need a smartcard or other physical token based system. But most people really don't need that level.

Personally, I'd rank "stop touching stuff with gloves on" and "take off the lab coat when getting a coffee" much higher than "lock your computer screen".

In a previous lab I worked one of my colleagues used to read my email. I did of course used to lock my screen. But of course she read my emails while I was sat there not while I left the room.

That's just crass. :( Don't shoulder-surf w/o an invitation. Don't watch someone type their password. Tell someone immediately if they expose their password. Don't touch someone else's screen. Don't move someone else's cables. Don't leak someone else's private info.
