The difference between getting a fellowship is often determined by these miniscule things though. When thousands of people apply for the same scholarship, especially at junior levels, it's inevitable.

It's sadly not determined by these small things, in my experience, but more by nepotism and the patron system, which many think is meritocracy. I'm not saying science is corrupt, but that who you know counts way more than the small thing in the OP!
