Just to clarify, the people I have in mind in the OP have accounts.

They just refuse to tweet. Because — you guessed it — it's not shown to be anything but a waste of time.

Also depends on when they started. For some reason my carefully curated list of scientists all started tweeting about politics in 2016. ;)

I don't mind, because I decided to follow humans instead of PR accounts.

I have been doing politics on social media since 2009. Also I never thought science was apolitical [true for both meanings of the word]. Science, like life, is rife with politics.https://twitter.com/KordingLab/status/934887132711317504 …

True, but there certainly are days where I prefer the random termite colony picture, or a Cordyceps zombie...

I've not found twitter to be particularly enjoyable. If you're not part of some close knit group, you're simply ignored. Especially if your profile doesn't match an expected pattern.

Every tweet is stressful because I feel like I'm interrupting a private conversation. Although twitter is ostensibly public, it feels more closed to outsiders than typical internet forums. So usually, I just keep to myself.

People in expectation, only seem to respond to those they deem equal to or above themselves. Or to correct or make fun of you. Others in the twitter lower class don't even bother communicating with each other as they're busy saying 'look at me' to the upper class.

@o_guest I'm very sorry to hear this too. I do recognize some of what you say. I have many positive experiences here on twitter, but agree that some conversations may have 'ingroup' feel.1 reply 0 retweets 3 likes
Maybe I avoid them. But I'm going to start to try to notice this more. It's important when I say Twitter is useful that I also know the exclusionary side too, outside it's not a full picture.
