Almost every time I've discussed Twitter w academics who don't tweet they say "it's a waste of time — no signal" even though I've never argued w them 1 way or the other. I mean OK they aren't 100% wrong since anything can be framed as a waste of time, esp w these types of ppl. 
They just refuse to tweet. Because — you guessed it — it's not shown to be anything but a waste of time.

Also depends on when they started. For some reason my carefully curated list of scientists all started tweeting about politics in 2016. ;)

I've not found twitter to be particularly enjoyable. If you're not part of some close knit group, you're simply ignored. Especially if your profile doesn't match an expected pattern.
