There are cases where GH pages won't cut it (e.g., if you need a DB with server-side php or strong password protection) but for pretty much everything else there's a github pages workaround.

That being said though...There is an imperfect workaround for what I said can't be done too! Both of those workarounds were/are used on http://redistrict.science .

For the password protection you have to change the robots.txt to accomplish it. And for the webform to google sheet I removed the bit where it automatically emails you because that is annoying. All these mods can be seen here at this repo:https://github.com/oliviaguest/redistrict.science …

same here (now). I've stuck with it for the same reason. I also love that I can put html files for slides/papers/posts on my other repos and link to them with relative URLs! same with CV
