github pages worked great for me: knew enough html/css to hack something together, but not enough web stuff to deal with self-hosting
-
(and by "knew" I mean "figured very basic things out barely well enough as I went along")
-
I can do both and have dealt with self-hosted sites, I just prefer github because it's so robust.

-
There are cases where GH pages won't cut it (e.g., if you need a DB with server-side php or strong password protection) but for pretty much everything else there's a github pages workaround.
-
That being said though...There is an imperfect workaround for what I said can't be done too! Webform to email/spreadsheed: https://github.com/dwyl/html-form-send-email-via-google-script-without-server … And basic but not perfect password:https://github.com/matteobrusa/Password-protection-for-static-pages …
-
Both of those workarounds were/are used on http://redistrict.science .

-
For the password protection you have to change the robots.txt to accomplish it. And for the webform to google sheet I removed the bit where it automatically emails you because that is annoying. All these mods can be seen here at this repo:https://github.com/oliviaguest/redistrict.science …

Thanks for sharing! I just played around with wordpress all evening, but am not happy with the outcome. I like your websites so much better. Will have a look at your code.
-
Personally, WordPress is awful. I'm not sure if my code will help as I've written it with only me in mind but it's GPL licensed so feel free to use & cite me, open an issue if you want to discuss, etc. You'll also find many tutorials on Google better than my code I'm sure!

-
Also to clarify, when I say personally WordPress is awful. I mean for me to use it. I by no means think people are being inherently bad when they resort to a CMS. I just personally really like working from scratch.

-
Haha, that’s the way I understood it anyways, so no worries!

Feel free to ask me anything and the source code for all of them is on my GitHub!
Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

another good option (works with github pages) is using a static site generator like jekyll: write in markdown, render with a template (and lots of good ones out there you can tweak). much easier than writing something from scratch.

That's what I was alluding to and how I have created my sites, yes! Free domain name for students for a year here too! https://education.github.com/pack

Wow this looks amazing!! I have GitHub but didn't understand how to use it for creating a webpage. Than you, I'll definitely look into your code!!

-
Yeah, look into the student pack too [if you haven't already]! https://education.github.com/pack
