Almost every time I've discussed Twitter w academics who don't tweet they say "it's a waste of time — no signal" even though I've never argued w them 1 way or the other. I mean OK they aren't 100% wrong since anything can be framed as a waste of time, esp w these types of ppl.

I agree. I learn an aweful lot from twitter. Highly useful and interesting info comes to me that I would otherwise not be exposed to, and I get to have fascinating and stimulating discussions with people that I would otherwise not have opportunity to perhaps even meet IRL.

Yes, it can be useful and also very frustrating. I suppose it depends on the kind of discussion or intellectual exchange you are looking for. I enjoy it but I also get a strong feeling of insufficiency. Worth the effort nonetheless.
