Well, it seems to me that this is just the facade of it
Yeah, there are so many problems with society there. It has a special place in my heart — and I do not rule out visiting and maybe even buying a second home there at some point — but I am not going to delude myself about how bad it is.
I understand, I think. It is always there in your life but you are better far away. It is very good tho that you manage to have a objective view. Deluding ourselves could be a way to cope but an inadvisable one.
A big thing I miss is being able to talk to people from my own country/linguistic background. But when I meet them I realise why it's so hard — with it comes a lot of baggage I have outgrown. There are huge exceptions though! And I cherish my Cypriot Greek-speaking friends.
Sadly all the ones I know who are also feminists/cool/not bigots live in Cyprus. And they try to enact positive change and it's very impressive and humbling.
It must be terribly hard there now for, say, free-thinkers, I guess. I understand well your point about missing talking to your own "people". I also miss it sometimes, but I often change my mind as soon as I start a convo... Exceptions do exist, of course, thank goodness!
Nice chatting to you btw
