I believe simulations from cognitive models can be an interesting way to develop theory, and should be publishable. Are there any arguments against this belief? Are data necessary for publication in cog sci?

Link? I’m curious
-
If you want a specific one without data, here:https://elifesciences.org/articles/21397
-
So it’s a paper that isn’t about modelling behaviour. No behavioural data required then. Joshua is talking about behavioural modelling
-
Neural data then. Why is behaviour special?
-
You’re trying to model the behaviour of a system. Neural, behavioural, it’s all data about the system
-
Not all modelling is primarily/directly "trying to model the behaviour of a system" some modelling is the encapsulation of theoretical principles into executable code. Similar but not identical goals.
-
Sure. But that’s not what Joshua was asking about, I didn’t think

Also to be really brutally honest, when I feel really dark I do start thinking I'm not a real scientist because of the attitudes of some (i.e., that because I don't do empirical work I'm not as good/scientific as them). This is rare of course as I love my work, but it happens.
-
Fwiw, you're a great scientist and an example to many
-
Seconded. Science needs you. Don't let them grind you down.
-

You have no idea what this means to me. Seriously. Thank you, both! -
big fan of your research here as well! plus all-round human contribution to twitter!
-
Riccardo! OMG you. Honestly, I am so honored and happy. Next time I go super dark, these tweets will cheer me up. Bookmarking them.

-
Yeah you should come to Aarhus some time
-
I'm scared of the cold but yes, of course, I'd be honored!

Ha, throwing my PhD thesis on the pile as well. Not one bit of human data, lots of modelling and generation of testable predictions / alternate explanatioms for behavior
-
Anyone test any yet?
-
I mean, it’s kind of my point. The rubber meets the road at data and experiment
-
Your point is her PhD is less than or worthless even? My phd also has zero data. So?
-
Same for me: zero data in my PhD thesis, just mathematical proofs and philosophical argument. Not even simulations! (Really, I had ppl suggest to me to at least do simulations, I suspect for the 'experimental feel')
