If you could go back in your academic career, what one thing would you do differently? This is inspired from two separate chats with @LauraGrimaNeuro & @H_Eisenbarth. I would love to hear your views, especially since it can help us avoid making each others' mistakes!

I could start off! I think looking around me and seeing how many people programme, I really which I started doing programming, even if a bit of it in my spare time, from the first year of undergraduate. So definitely programming for me!pic.twitter.com/RYEgEyPelq

I agree. Even though I had minors in computational linguistics and AI, I'd do more programming if I had to do it again. Definitely also more stats. And I would have learned to say "no" more often at an earlier age.

Yeah. More stats and more programming. I learned to programme but in languages that are not v useful now. And my stats training was very poor - bare minimum deemed necessary at that time. Also wish I had appreciated the importance of open practices much sooner.

I think I would try and get a better grounding in stats. But also perhaps be a bit more programmatic, rather than piecemeal, about research agenda. Hard as am easily distracted / attracted to shiny new puzzles.

Yes, I agree. It's hard to be programmatic at early career stage. I also wish I'd studied more philosophy of science. Somehow during my PhD I was spending 12 hours a day in the lab, and yet not learning everything I needed to!

I think doing a BSc in Computer Science (with a pre-planned goal of going into Cognitive Science) really paid off for me. I do not claim all my life decisions paid off — but that one really did.
