THIS. For years I didn't realise what I suffered was flashbacks, as it was never a cinematic out of body like experience. Even as I started to understand what they were this year, an ex was super unsupportive about pushing me into them. Flashbacks are NEVER portrayed correctly.https://twitter.com/MogTheConfessor/status/934127991449444352 …

Or just pure misconception. The word "flashback" is unhelpful in itself, people who don't have them will automatically assume it is something like cinematic flashbacks, like visions of the terrible thing that happened. I prefer a term I got from a great book: amygdala hijacking

When I am triggered into a flashback, my brain and body react exactly the same as they did at the time the trauma occurred. Not only that, but the trauma of each time I've gone through the same flashback adds up to make it even worse.

My brain responds to people in the here and now as if they were the people who hurt me in the then and past. I am in a CONSTANT state of fear and panic. And it doesn't last for minutes. Or hours. It lasts for days.

It lasts longer than I often realise. I think I'm "normal" again when in fact the fear has just become normalised to me. I'm still responding and reacting in fear and panic, even when I think I'm not.

And I can look and sound perfectly okay. Or I can look and sound like a "crazy" person. Flashbacks are horrible. I experienced them a lot as a teen. I flashback to having those awful flashbacks sometimes.

Yeah, PTSD is tough. I also had no idea what flashbacks really were until I had them and had them explained to me. ☹️

It's one of those things where it really does help to know. It doesn't stop them but the recognising can go a long way <3
