Ok, hope you're sitting down.
Compared to my post doc years it has increased in daily volume by a factor of 10 with a huge drop in SNR

But there are really cool positions where you don't have to do too much admin right? Although rare I remember
@DuncanAstle got something like this. But still people sometimes have to go on sabbatical just to have time to write up papers rather than answering emails@neuro_boffin1 reply 0 retweets 1 like -

There are a small number of really amazing people who have tenured research-only professorships in certain places (e.g. Ghent is one that offers these), but these are extremely rare. Next best thing is a fellowship, and then buy out on an ERC (or other grant).

But one immutable reality of academia is that greater seniority always comes w/ greater management/admin of some kind. It's not all bad - you have greater ability to change your environment & o/c more job security - but nothing compares to the pure science of the post doc yrs!

Ahh this makes me think! It seems some prefer PI, some postdoc years and some maybe some other time in academia still. Would love to hear from people Which years of academia did you enjoy most and why?

In hindsight, my Ph.D. was definitely one of the worst periods of my entire life.

DClinPsych wasn’t easy but I met friends for life and now have a career I am immensely proud of and passionate about. Also made sure my school maths teacher who said I’d never amount to anything called me Doctor when I was invited back for alumini talk
