Most ppl don’t understand data and ppl are busy so need to see stuff quickly and for it to make sense. I use excel for producing simple charts and graphs. But admittedly this if for clinical utility not for publication/ academic/ research forums. I’ve Always had good feedback 👍

Interesting to get view from clinical psy where maybe less technical compared to other areas where there might be more focus on what's useful to communicating data in a clear way. Other clinicians views? @vaughanbell @Kingspsychol @ProfDavidNutt @ResearchDigest @neuropsychblog

Surely at a baseline any kind of data needs to have application/ clinical utility. As I work with CYPs, any data or reports I use are done in a way that service users and lay ppl can understand. Making data accessible is a skill in itself!

Yes it is an important skill though I wonder if there is more importance in something like programming rather than communicating research to public. Perhaps it depends on research area? @WiringTheBrain @RachaelElward @husain_lab @keithmobrien @mariam_s_aly @NilliLavie @nickdgrey

Don’t think the two are comparable as ‘either or’. You may need programming to help get data in the first place- but if you can’t communicate and it’s need in some fashion, then the perceived value drops exponentially.

Good point. Important to build up all skills as a researcher from programming, to using statistics to writing effectively for both an academic & also general audiences, which are two different kinds of creatures. But is this being a jack of all trades? @psyd @ekd1v07 @o_guestpic.twitter.com/9blYII4a3V

I think they are core competencies of a good researcher, than when maximised, make excellent researchers and academics.

Honestly I never really thought a researcher needs to be good at multiple skills. But thinking about it, it's true. As well as understanding your area and being good at writing, you need to be up to date with programming, stats, be good at choosing good PhD students etc

It's true, the post doc years are in many ways the golden years as a researcher. From there beckons admin, science from a distance, 'strategic plans', and shit tons of tedious email.

3-4 years PhD, 3-4 years post-doc, hopefully both intense but also enjoyable, and then try to get a lectureship and work on developing your own lab; the plan of doing so and how to get there should start taking shape towards the end of the phd
