The reason academics, by which I mean PIs, within Computer Science don't hire "many young computer scientists" is because they don't have the money to. Academia is not as well-funded as, for example, Facebook is. This recent AI hype cycle has gutted Computer Science departments.https://twitter.com/mathbabedotorg/status/930444763093925889 …

Replying to @zeynep
I'm so confused by this idea that people who do basic research for a living are just not doing it. WE ARE DOING IT BUT NOBODY PAYS US. We live and breathe it, but living and breathing it can make you starve to death if you have no money. Ask the government to fund us more.

See also: those of us who are information scientists who write critical stuff about tech and data and the like. They closed so many departments, there aren’t any permanent jobs.

Yeah her oped ignores the tremendous work that is being done despite purposeful sabotage and exploitation. That’s a bigger story to me than what Stanford isn’t doing

Also there's computational academics outside computer science.

I just wanted to specifically underline that CS departments have been literally hollowed out by lack of funding coupled with industry poaching.
