I'm so confused by this idea that people who do basic research for a living are just not doing it. WE ARE DOING IT BUT NOBODY PAYS US. We live and breathe it, but living and breathing it can make you starve to death if you have no money. Ask the government to fund us more.
-
See also: those of us who are information scientists who write critical stuff about tech and data and the like. They closed so many departments, there aren’t any permanent jobs.
-
Yeah her oped ignores the tremendous work that is being done despite purposeful sabotage and exploitation. That’s a bigger story to me than what Stanford isn’t doing

Also there's computational academics outside computer science.

I just wanted to specifically underline that CS departments have been literally hollowed out by lack of funding coupled with industry poaching.

Yep. Moreover, we are often bound by cultural funding constraints that make it hard to offer competitive salaries.

I'm not sure why it suddenly popped to the top of my news feed this AM. I don't think anyone retweeted it. Is Twitter fiddling with their algorithms again?

I was looking for that link and found this great tweet instead. :)
-
Fuck it! I'll RT it too!

reminds me of the last dot com bubble phase: many CS grads going straight to web companies; when the bottom dropped out, CS grad school applications skyrocketed. Probably won't happen again.

The good news is that those they _are_ able to hire, those who will accept severe salary cuts to do research, are often idealists. Hype-funding can have exactly the opposite effect: opportunistic PIs will apply for anything that raises their grant-money scores.
