I keep going back to the fact that Louis CK, Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Spacey, Charlie Sheen--these men are all part of media production that shapes our culture around gender and sexuality.

Feminists are constantly told that pop culture critique takes too much space, that media is just media and that it has no impact in real life gendered oppression.

I think it's pretty conclusive, at this point, that "it's just a movie" doesn't cut it anymore. Sometimes it is just ONE movie, but look at how much these men have produced & impacted our culture.

And these are men whose abuse is coming to light because feminists in the past pushed for these acts to be recognized as abuse--imagine all the ones whose victims were never heard. And the culture THEY created.

it's not "just movies" when huge chunks of cultural production are being made by abusers! THEY are culture creators! they have huge power to define what we think is right or wrong.

the meanings we learn in pop culture can define our values, they can define how we define rape and assault. And people like Woody Allen get to pair older men w young girls, and posit that as ambiguous--NO!

Louis CK in particular posed as a progressive to make a name for himself and from that moment on, he knew he could create offensive stuff without real reproach. bc he earned his spot and he's a white dude.

Comedy in particular has a BAD history with accepting rape jokes as ok, which imo normalizes rape as acceptable. (I recommend you read SHRILL by Lindy West on this subject specifically)
