What would be a better phrase?
I have to admit, I don't know. I don't think my disagreement with the phrase is just about the words but the concept itself.

I personally don't see science as others (eg a banker, a system admin) see their job. I'm not trying to escape from it in my free time.

I see it more like how a professional violinist or poet or landscape artist sees their "job". I use quotes because it's not the same job.

That's a fair point. As someone who spends most of their free time working, I struggle to properly define it. But it's a useful shorthand
