The paper isn’t yet submitted (media attention is premature), but you can read the preprint here (+open data & code)https://www.biorxiv.org/content/early/2017/08/23/135244 …
How did this huge misunderstanding (?) happen? Did they write this without talking to you?
They didn’t talk to me at all. But I’ve also been turning down radio interviews because I don’t think I should talk about preprints.
I preprint for the scientific community and to get feedback before submission (feedback on this paper has been really helpful).
Right, so they just spotted your preprint and went for it. Strange ethos... But it's the DM!
The DM based their article (which isn’t as bad as the title/bullet points) on an Economist article, whose author I did correspond with.
I told him also I didn’t want to talk about a preprint, but he said he’d write the article anyways, so I should at least fact check it.
Wow. I'm sorry. So the Economist journalist essentially misled you into talking about it and when you said you'd rather not they wrote it?
He was totally upfront about writing the article. It’s just that I had no power to stop it and he convinced me that my input could only help
So he found the preprint and contacted you? Interesting. So some journalists trawl through preprints.
