As a 2nd yr grad, I asked a UG for some code, st like "see what kind of progress you can make by Fri". She did all nighters & skipped psets.https://twitter.com/neuroimm/status/917141988520144896 …
In all honesty this explains, in part, why USA people work so much harder.
-
-
Cypriots also tend to work harder but that's not because British professors threaten us.

-
I can't speak for everyone, but I felt I grew up with this sense of competition at every stage of education. Tied into extracurricular stuff
-
I think that's how I felt and sadly not just for school for appearance and for character. I felt every part of me from my personality to my
-
grades was just a competition for my parents to one-up other parents. This hasn't changed. Although I've cut them out significantly.
-
It's very cultural and it's quite harmful. I have no idea what the USA is like but Cyprus is extremely socially competitive.
-
I feel like in the UK people are allowed to be themselves way more and parents love them unequivocally. Not conditional on certain traits.
-
For example it's not that unusual for people to say, esp fathers, "I two 2 children and one daughter".

-
So yeah culture really affects you. In my case I eventually realised if I work hard in the UK I won't need to be sent back.
