I'm lost again. Maybe this is a field based thing. Does math work differently in matlab somehow? Not stoking.

Math is math. But there’s a whole world of programming languages & environments out there of varying quality, and they matter.

Olivia does a nice job of detailing why Matlab is lousy. It mostly thrives in environments where people don’t know other options exist.

This is a field specific thing at this point. Also, I think the population that this is targeted towards is those that don't write their own functions necessarily, which I can see could be problematic

It’s not field specific. It’s a crappy closed source tool that limits your productivity. There’s no field where that’s a good thing.

Some people want to write more than one function per file.

Some people want to control their namespace.

I do both of these things in Matlab, but...

Yeah, Matlab evolved a little. That's a fair point. I don't most users do this though.

I have a feeling that if most Matlab users were like you it'd only have a bad name because it's closed source.

Thanks :). ...I can't help that one :/. I have proficiency that if I can understand a problem conceptually, I can program it in Matlab. 1/2

Hard to give that up to learn a new language, though I do use Python sometimes too. 2/2
