How much scientific progress has @Mathworks impeded by latching it’s two-bit, small time blood funnel onto scientists who don’t know better?https://twitter.com/neurobongo/status/915720980131123200 …

Thanks - this is hilarious! But I was sad at the Fortran dig. My first programming language, about a hundred years ago, was Fortran 77.
-
Fortran 77 had its charms. The lack of pointer aliasing (as in, e.g. C) makes it possible for the compiler to optimize really well.
-
Yes, very helpful when you feed the compiler with punch cards!! With a cycle time for bug fixes (including syntax errors) of > 1 day!
-
my dad had piles of those cards in our basement, complete w/ little bits of tape for spot-corrections!
-
I never had the joy of punch cards, but I did grow up learning to program on one of these: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DECmate
-
When I was a freshman in college, I programmed a Univac 1100.
