I'd assume he was either mentally ill or on drugs. Even if it was 'just' an attempt to damage a third person's rep, it's seriously sick.

I know mentally ill people and people who do drugs, it's not the at all and to make a connection is misplaced. Sober men do this.

It's not abnormal. That's important for everybody who doesn't experience it to understand. It happens to me almost every day on some level.
