So did I when I was a phd student. It was very little and other PhDs invited me on purpose to places I couldn't afford.

Yeah, it was plainly a way to shame. Really painful stuff. So glad others have experienced this. I thought I was alone.

Big realisation: (a) they'd never had to worry about money and (b) they thought everyone was like them

I got humble bragged to for years about how they were so far ahead financially... The one thing that's amusing is I do now own a house.
