Here's an oldie from

Main reasons for my switch from Matlab to
#Python were portability. 1) Matlab couldn't connect to license server during fieldwork 1/ -
Have you thought about trying
#JuliaLang? If you were coming from Matlab and/or R, it may be a better fit that#Python for you. -
-
That's where PyCall and RCall would help you to move over to
#JuliaLang without losing those ecosystems, plus call C and Fortran directly. -
Why are you trying to recruit him to Julia?

I think it's a great language for lots of things (even general programming, not just technical/numeric/scientific), and community is great!

I first renounced matlab when embraced
#openscience. I tried octave but it can't cope. Then I fell in love with python & no going back.

First used Matlab because it was needed for neuroimaging (SPM)...
-
at that time there was no real competition - Matlab libraries and editing tools were far ahead of anything else...
-
I found them helpful for many other scientific problems, modelling, plotting stats and became very fluent...
-
... still if I were starting today, I would certainly focus on Python. It's interactive tools are still not quite as straightforward...
-
... and key tools standard tools that use Matlab such as SPM haven't fully been replaced...
-
... but the language is way better, fully platform independent, free etc. And many libraries are way ahead.
