In the end you realize it's a sheer numbers game. Every lab must train far more talented scientists than there can ever be jobs for.

Although I'm one of those people that thinks going to industry isn't a death sentence because my experiences in academia have been grim.

As in, I think going to industry can be awesome for the right person and staying in academia can be abusive for some.
