If they are a big name and your criticise their tiny corner of the field, it's almost guaranteed that they will be invited IMHO.

I thought that usually postdocs and ECRs do most of the reviewing but for selection panels for grants, perhaps worse?

PIs do tons of reviews. Easily more than I have ever done are done by PIs I know every few months.

Yes I only did a handful of reviews before I became a PI. In my own exp the idea that PIs give all their reviews to postdocs is a myth.

Actually according to Publons I did more than I thought before PIfication. About 25% of my reviews were prior to becoming a PI...

But all came directly from journals. Never been passed on one from my own PI when I was a postdoc. Could be cause I had a good PI of crs...

I once passed a review to my postdoc but after asking the editor & specifically because it fit my postdoc's interests & expertise.
