So my buddy who is in software developing studies history at uni but has written code regularly since he was a kid. No formal training.
I think you are mischaracterizing the population of coders. Nobody taught me Python.
-
-
But you had formal training of some kind. You said you could pick up python in hours.
-
If you can learn python in a few hours or a day you don't need anyone to teach you that.
-
I also had a BBC Micro as a child.

Literally everybody who is a coder, regardless of degree, has taught themselves a huge amount of stuff including whole languages.
-
I feel my point has largely gone misunderstood, whether intentionally or not. So if everyone just self learns what's the point of formal ed?
-
Mainly to ensure people cover all the bases like ethics, standards, etc., and to create a heuristic for evaluating candidates.
-
I don't actually think you are in disagreement with me or that I am trying to change your mind. I do think bringing in successful men who
-
don't have formal qualifications but have good jobs doesn't explain why formal qualifications aren't needed. If anything it underlines why
-
they ARE needed.
-
Sorry this is getting tiring. I'm not qualified to have an opinion this. I asked a *question*. Out of interest.
-
I will only try to explain again if you ask me to. Otherwise, you're right no point continuing if tiring.
