I still use matlab and matlab only.

If you can learn a language in an afternoon then surely that's not a problem?

This assertion needs many caveats. Matlab more than sufficient for many many researchers.
-
Not if they want to use
#openscience#opensource tools. -
And, on a related point, not if they want to save money or have their code open/accessible by others who can't afford a license.
-
So yeah, there's more to knowing more than just matlab than just the language itself.
-
Last time I had a discussion on this, I wrote a blog post about it. So I really do not think there's actually that much more for me to say.

I'm sure there's lots of reasons to know multiple languages and I'm sure they're good reasons. But whether they're worth the time is a diff Q

I would never tell you what to do with your time. I respect you can make that choice for yourself. I merely wanted to address the worry.

Sure. The reason im not learning python is not because I don't think python is great. It probably is

To give an example, I was taught C in 3 days in my compsci course. Python was taught over an afternoon or so. It was very good training for

realising that learning how to learn is the skill.

Also check out
@Codecademy if you want to learn Python. Haven't used it myself but everybody I recommend it to loves it. -
I loved it when I was learning python as my first lang but if you already know some programming basics I think it can be a bit slow!
-
Oh, you learned python first? Nice! Did that make learning/learning about C or Prolog a shock?
-
Ugh don't remind me about prolog. Still don't get the point... I used C++ before I used C so I think I eased myself into it.

You've done like everything inverse to me and still came out OK.
