If you can learn a language in an afternoon then surely that's not a problem?

That is a skill I developed because I spent months learning others, like lisp.

I disagree, I've had students jump from Matlab to python without trouble.

I was not implying Matlab to Python is a tough jump at all.

I was implying Matlab to X where X is something very different is a tough jump. The same would be true for Python to X.

Agree with this. Knowing the paradigm of one language can often help you work better in another.

And once you know 2-3 Algol-derived languages you realize how similar they truly are to each other.
